DA VINCI : why this name ?

For those who haven't read the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson (KSR), I must explain "Da Vinci", the name of this blog.
In Red Mars (the first book), when humans settle on Mars by 2026, they build stations and then, entire cities. Among these places is "Da Vinci", working base for an ambitious community of scientists innovating in very different areas such as agriculture, terraforming, weaponry and medecine.
Of course, "Da Vinci" refers to Leonardo Da Vinci, scientist, engineer and extremely polyvalent artist of the Renaissance who studied and practiced painting, sculpture, architecture, anatomy, weather, astronomy, military engineering, religious art, philosophy... The Renaissance definitely inspired KSR to express the pioneer spirit that Mars settlers felt in front of the infinite potential of this new world.
In the books, Da Vinci is a planetary laboratory and also an efficient productive place. In the Mars trilogy, it will develop the longevity treatment (that doubles or triples life span), provide weapons for the first martian revolution (2061), humus for the green part of the terraforming effort, and thousands of oxygen masks for the refugees of Burroughs, the capital town flooded and destroyed during the second revolution (2127).
I then called my blog "Da Vinci" as a tribute to this conceptual and technical creativity that the human-settlement on Mars requires.

DA VINCI ? Pourquoi ce titre ?

Alors, pour ceux qui n'ont pas lu les livres de Kim Stanley Robinson, il faut une petite explication...
Lorsque les humains s'installent sur Mars, à partir de 2026, ils construisent des bases, puis des cités entières. L'une de ces villes se nomme Da Vinci. Sa particularité est d'abriter une grande communauté de scientifiques travaillant pour le développement de nouvelles technologies et techniques dans des domaines aussi variés que l'agriculture, le terraforming, l'armement ou la médecine.
Da Vinci fait bien sûr référence à Leonardo Da Vinci, scientifique et artiste hyper polyvalent qui a étudié et pratiqué la peinture, l'anatomie, la météo, l'astronomie, l'ingénierie militaire, l'architecture, l'art religieux...
La Renaissance a visiblement bien inspiré KSR pour exprimer le souffle du renouveau vécu par les premiers colons de Mars.
Da Vinci est donc un grand labo planétaire et un lieu de production technologique. Il travaillera notamment au traitement de longévité (qui double ou triple l'espérance de vie), aux missiles de défense des révolutionnaires, et à la production d'humus pour les premières plantations sur sol extérieur. Mais surtout, il fournira des dizaines de milliers de masques à oxygène pour l'évacuation de Burroughs, la capitale, inondée lors de la 2e révolution.
J'ai donc donné le nom de Da Vinci à mon blog, en référence à cette créativité de scientifiques et d'ingénieurs que la conquête de Mars nécessitera.
